From Express-Up requiring ARS to plain old money grabbing, minor-diety Brian Cooley explains why some cars will roll down the window automatically but not back up. He even answers why (in a time where reinventing the shifters is out of hand) window switches aren’t dial, rocker-switches or even touch screens.

My 8-year-old car does auto down and auto up on both sides and the sunroof does auto up, auto back, and auto close.

I have both in my BMW, but never realize how much I like until I get in something else and sit there like “I really have to hold this thing the whole time?”

Oh yeah? Well my car has crank windows.

I’ve never owned a car with crank windows. Even my 85 Fiero had power windows that still worked in 2016 .
I grew up in cars with crank windows though. First car my parents owned that had power windows was an 02 Grand Caravan.

Both of my front windows are auto up and down.

As someone with kids - I HATE auto-up/down windows for the rear positions. Ever try adjusting the amount of window opening for a 5-year old girl (“no up more, no down more” - repeat 20 times)? It’s a complete pain. If my kids (or any rear passenger) are too damn lazy to not hold down a button for an entire 3-5 seconds then I have failed as s parent.

I just had a rental 17 Cruze for a few weeks. The windows were all auto-down but all manual-up. Like WTF Chevy, that would have cost you like an extra two cents.

There’s also two kinds of automatic switches.
The kind with a detent for normal operation, and then a further stop for automatic, is fine.
The kind that is just a normal switch, but uses how long you've been holding it, is awful.

Ok so I understand how ARS is important for express up -equipped vehicles, but m y 1995 Mustang doesn’t have express up. It does, however, have one-touch (express) down for the driver’s side, but not for the passenger’s side. Would I like to have express up? Sure. But it doesn’t bother me so much as how the car seems to taunt me with having express down on only one side.
Unfortunately, in this car’s case, it’s not a simple ma tter of software. The driver door has a s eparate one touch down module wired in- between the switch and motor, and it responds to how long you push the down button . So if I wanted to, I could find another one-touch down module and install it in the passenger door (I’d just have to run an extra hot wire to supply power to it) . It’s just a matter of finding one for an acceptable price and finding the motivation to install it.

Ford does a lot of the “hold for automatic movement” trigger switches.
It’s infuriating because you could click it down or up for a millisecond and it thinks you’re going for auto mode.

My focus st has this on all 4 windows so as far as I’m concerned nobody has an excuse anymore.
My mini lacking a lot of this convenience shit is one of the reasons I didn't like it. How expensive could intermittent wipers really be?

It’s a “safety” thing for all the children unfortunate enough to be crammed into the backseat of a Cruze.
